Independent Reading Requirements

Independent Reading

Liberty Charter High School

Objectives:

1. Students will develop a life-long love of reading when they are

given the freedom to choose their own novels, as well as the time

to read for enjoyment.

2. Students will continue to develop their vocabulary.

3. Students will continue to develop their thinking skills as they

read.

Ideas for Book Projects (Complete on of the following to meet the project requirement):

1. Literary Letters. The point of a literary letter is NOT to summarize the book you have read. Instead, it is a chance for you to give your opinions and use your creativity. Here are some things that could possibly be included in a literary letter:

A. What is your opinion of the book? Did you like it? Did you hate it? Any opinion is fine as long as you can support your opinions with details. Be specific.

B. How did the book end? Do you think you could have finished it better than the author did? Write a new ending for the book, making it happen the way you want.

C. How well did you get to know the characters? Did anyone in the book remind you of someone you know in real life? Compare a character to one of your friends or relatives. How are they alike? How are they different?

D. What did you learn from the book? Was it about a culture different from your own? What did you learn about that culture?

E. What issues did the author deal with in the book? Friendship? Prejudice? Parent relationships? War? What do you think about the issues?

F. Does the book remind you of a story in your own life? Try to connect things that have happened in your life to what is happening to one of the characters

2. You may choose from the following list of ideas, or run a creative idea of your own by me.

A. DEAR ABBY: Select a character who has a problem which “Abby” could help solve. Pretending that you are the character, write to Abby about your problem. Then pretend that you are Abby and give a mature answer. You may want to use a newspaper heading with a “Dear Abby” heading to mount your project.(1-2 pages)

B. Pretend you are a character in your book. Write several diary entries based on what you think your character would write.(1-2 pages)

C. Does the author interest you? Do some research and then write him/her a letter, telling what you think about the book. Ask questions and share your thoughts. Let us know if you get a response! (1-2 pages)

D. Design a book jacket for your book. Create a front cover design, as well as a summary of the book on the back. You may want to include a picture of the author and a short summary of him/her as well. (Art + 1 page summary) (Art can be scanned or created digitally and submitted electronically.)
